1st Renal Denervation in Greece with the Medtronic Symplicity Catheter System

The first use of this minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure in Greece, occurred September 21, 2011 at, the cath lab of the Α' Cardiology Clinic, School of Medicine, University of Athens, at Hippokration Hospital with 2 successful cases.

The Symplicity Catheter System is used to perform a procedure termed renal denervation (RDN). Once in place within the renal artery, the device delivers low-power RF energy to deactivate the surrounding renal sympathetic nerves. The one-time procedure aims to permanently reduce blood pressure. RDN may also allow patients to reduce or eliminate the need for lifelong antihypertensive medications.

The new method has been performed in large centers and has been accompanied by announcements in major medical journals. The intervention is technically easy and has not followed by any serious side effects or complications.

Renal denervation is a new approach for treating resistant hypertension, so prevalent in our country. Psimitis S.A., in collaboration with Medtronic is proud to offer this new treatment choice for first time in Greece.
